Hello,

I studied electronics way back in vocational high school and got back into it about 3 years back. I'm basically involved with SBC and vintage computing. I just ordered a digital logic analyzer with 16 channels/100MHZ. To round out my bench, I'd like to buy a digital oscilloscope. I had been looking at many local analog scopes which would probably serve my humble needs, but I'm not keen to spend money on a scope that is 20+ years old and might be working.

I've read plenty of articles and watched videos on comparisons. As this is a hobby and the focus is to help speed up troubleshooting of non-functioning 80s computers, I don't want to spend over $300.

Price wise, I was looking at:
  • Hantek DSO5102P
  • Rigol DS1102E
  • OWON SDS1102
  • UNI-T UTD2102CEX
I think I ruled out the UNI-T as their website doesn't inspire long-term confidence.

I think of the remaining three, I lean towards the Hantek. Good choice? Another model I should consider that is 'new' and under $300?

Thank you so much.

If you can stretch your budget slightly then I would suggest buying a Rigol DS1054Z instead of the DS1102E and then modding it for 100MHz operation using Riglol. It is a much newer scope with 4 channels and a bigger better screen.

Dittos to what TSman said and others will be lining up to say the same thing. I have been shopping for my first DSO for the last year, I have a couple old TEKs and an Analog Discovery USB scope so I have been in no rush. The 1054Z is so much closer to current than the 1102E. I never like to see someone buy brand new old technology. If someone were selling you a used one for $100 I would say fine, but otherwise go for the 1054Z. If you feel you need a logic analyzer then I think you should get a 4 channel scope to go with it. My 2 cents.

While beginner is relevent, you might want to move this to the Test Equipment forum for more feedback.

Be certain that the model has the option to set the trigger zero-reference to the Left side of the screen rather than always in the middle.

The 1054Z is $349.99 on TEquipment.net and you may even be able to apply the EEVBlog discount on top of that.  Well worth the extra from what everyone says.  I have the Hantek, I bought it from a forum member a year or 2 ago, already hacked to 300 MHz for a very good price.  It's not horrible but the 1054Z will be a better bet.

I have the Rigol 1054Z and it is WELL worth the $350. I absolutely love the thing. For a beginner scope the UI and button layout is intuitive and in no time you will have it figured out. Also modding/ hacking it to unlock all features including the 100Mhz is very easy and it took me no more than 5 minutes to do. So that's my take on it but its all up to you  :-+

I would not recommend the Hantek/Owon/Uni-T low-end scopes. For the budget you've indicated, stretch it just a bit to $350 and get the Rigol DS1054Z. It's much better bang-for-the-buck than the DS1102E.

There are additional interesting options above $400, but the DS1054Z still rules the entry level market.

I didn't see anyway to apply a promo code on TEquipment.

Ask for the code here- https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/eevblog-members-discount-at-tequipment/msg1805051/#msg1805051
There should be a spot for the code at checkout.  However, it may not apply to the 1054Z.  Once you get the code, you could call them and ask if it does.

I recently made atop 10 list - I think there are better options to Rigol at about every price point.

Without any justification of the choices or the order, your ‘chart’ is less than useless.
