Method to draw custom shaped pads
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:05:16 pm »
Ive got a couple of components whereby I need to have custom shapes as pads: E.g. this RF filter:

Regardless of the board, I would always layout this footprint at a minimum so it makes sense to include this in the PCB lib as it reduces effort redrawing. This is also the recommended footprint.

However, I get lots of errors...

I had another footprint for an inductor that id used fill and circles to draw which resulted in the same mess of errors so I redid as rectangular pads and all went away. I presume the problem is unassigned nets with fills and shapes...

What is the proper method of drawing custom shaped pads for components in Altium?

For that kind of pad you could duplicate it with two rectangular SMD pads (not fills/shapes) with touching edges. Name them both '1'. It may be that you need to add a design rule to allow these same-nets to touch each other. I forget

Try

Design | Netlist | Update Free Primitives From Component Nets

That should assign nets to the primitives in the component to match the pads they are connected to.

Recent versions have better tools for creating custom pad shapes. Footprints can contain region shapes which have their own solder and paste mask expansion settings. I don't know for sure but I suspect these regions will get nets assigned automatically based on their connection to the component pads.

Design | Netlist | Update Free Primitives From Component Nets didnt seem to work. The odd thing is some of these footprints are created by the IPC wizard.
