Adding text to step file
« on: August 24, 2024, 02:52:24 pm »
I'm making a custom keypad using Omron B3F-1050 momentary push button switches. I can order the caps from Omron, however I would like to label the caps, so will most likely 3D print them.

I have an older Prusa MK2, and the slicer software does allow addition of embossed text but I would prefer to embed the text into each the step file for each cap. Make a library of key caps.

I can manipulate step files in Altium so if I had just the embossed text as a step file I could add it to the existing step file for the cap.

I'm using an old version of Altium 13.3 and Win 7.

Is there a free text to embossed text 3D step file generation tool available?

- - Right tool for the job - -

If you're going to create 3D objects, you don't use a slicer and you don't use a tool for laying out PCBs.

You need a 3D-CAD program.  I use FreeCAD but there are others out there (some you will need to purchase).

Here is a teaser tutorial in FreeCAD:

'MangoJelly Solutions' has many other tutorials on his channel.
Be careful which version of FreeCAD he is using in the tutorial (not all use the same version) because FreeCAD has dramatically changed over its development lifespan.

The gentleman also did a video for modifying STEP and STL files.
