Hi Roger
It is looking good
so this 3d printing is not as easy as it looks, does it take a long time to learn what settings to use ?

It is not that bad, I don't use mine a heck of a lot and like anything, some problems come up just from the nature of what you are working with.

ABS needs to be hot to melt, it's stronger and longer lasting. But as it cools it shrinks and depending on the shape that can cause it to come unstuck from the print bed.

I have used mine a few times to make inserts or brackets for bikes. Even made a part for a Morgan +4 as the gearbox part is no longer made. I had the part modelled and printed within the weekend and the car was on the road the following weekend.

OMG, a good friend in college (circa 1963) had a Morgan that looked like that with a wood frame (not sure of the model year).   He occasionally had to tighten the screws.  A dream car for me.

Sorry for the OT.  I couldn't resist.  Gorgeous real car.

I bet it is very handy for parts you can not get anymore,
i bet when you got it , you were trying to think of things to print,
and it is good it is getting quicker to print things now days,
but you do have to know how to set it up,
i think a lot that get them use pre made files,
a wile ago i helped another ham on the FT-817 group, set up his data interface, and he said that he had a 3d printer
and if there was some thing that i needed, and i asked him to make a soldering iron tip holder, as i have Metcal irons ,
and he told me to look on thingiverse, so i did and found one in seconds, it is a great site, the stand was for a different make so all i had to do was open up the holes about 0.5mm,
Thanks again Dave

The family has two 4/4 and a +8 Sports. So know them well enough.

So I heard an odd noise while sitting at my PC, and yep it came unstuck again. The damned room cooled down I think. Will try some PLA tomorrow. Don't normally have this many issues but I will get there. I have got a 37mm high print though, just 6mm (20 layers) that it missed.

Considering this is for a microscope (inside gentle use I assume) black PLA would be my choice.
I mainly use PETG and PLA. That fills about 90% of my uses. PLA is the easiest to use and has good adherence to the platter when cleaned of oils.
I reserve flexible and carbon (for SEM holders)  stuff for special applications.

I also found that problems with the 3D printer are usually when it is idle for a few weeks or more.
The platter needs to be cleaned with dish soap (non perfumed like Dawn) and the filament purged in the extruder and the filament spool dried up in the humidity controlled oven even if left in the bag with a desiccant.
Otherwise I get all sorts of issues.

Fortunately I use mine two or three times a week for the car (old Miata), pool, bathroom, garage, electronics, lathe test parts, etc...
Many people don't realise they would use a 3D printer quite often if there.

Both were gifts from my wife (Miata and 3d printer)  :)

I managed to do it!

ABS, came unstuck.
PLA came unstuck.
Cleaned and cleaned,
PLA didn't come unstuck but ran out of PLA.
Stripped head down to clean.
PLA snapped after 3 layers as the new reel is heavy and didn't want to roll nicely.
Sat there with YT vids, manually rolling the reel to prevent snapping.

Printed.

3D printers are like test gear, great when they work. Damned annoying when they don't. I will post the part at some point, Dave, I was hoping to go for a bike ride but people want me to be Social this weekend, it's what I get for getting older I guess.

Its in the post. I feel lazy getting the postman to pick it up.

Turns out Post Office recommends Evri and DPD for parcels, then wants to charge a good portion of an arm for it. So I went direct to Royal Mail and it was a lot cheaper and he collected it today while I was at work.

I sent two parts, the ABS one that didn't fully print but might work. The other is PLA and it is the right height. I printed it with two layers on the wall so you can sand it down if you need to adjust the fitment.

Hi Roger
Thanks for going out of your way for me,I do find Royal Mail the best still, will let you know how it works,
one thing i have to ask is the stand mount that this will be fitting in has a lock screw with a point on the end to hold it in position, is there a possibility if i screw this in could it damage the ring or is the hardness ok for this, or should i try not to use this screw,
Thanks Again,
Dave 2E0DMB

I printed with plenty of infill so it should be reasonably strong.

Give it a try, I can print more.

If you are concerned about the pressure of the set screw you can heat a tack or small nail and press it into the adaptor at the appropriate location.  The head of the tack will spread the load over a large enough area to eliminate any serious concern about the set screw pressure.  Drilling a small hole in the plastic adapter prior to installation of the tack will make the process easier.  You can heat the tack with just about anything - a soldering iron, a candle or whatever.

Today The post women had my adaptors from mendip_discovery,Thanks Again,
The Adaptors fit very well, it is a shame that the ABS one failed half way through as it is a tighter fit with the ali spacer, but the other is fine just a little bit more play but still very good, why i wanted the long size is to hold the LED Ring Light,
if i mount the ring light to the lens i can use the ABS Adaptor, i am very happy with your great work Roger,
Thanks Again,

Hi Again, With the grub/Thumb screw on the stand to hold the ring from turning, This works well and does not mark the adaptor ring,
Thanks Dave 2E0DMB

Good to hear. The print has plenty of infill so should be nice and strong.

also i just had a read about infill, There is a lot to this 3d printing

Thanks Dave
