Author Topic: I'm updating a Wiki site for the Tektronix 1240 / 1241, and I need your help  (Read 4404 times)

I've owned a Tektronix 1241 Logic Analyzer for some time now, and thought I had everything to work with various processors.  Boy was I wrong! 

I started doing some online research, and found that information for the 1240 and the color version the 1241, seems to be scattered all over the web.  I've slowly been collecting as much information on it as I can.  Accessories, part numbers, ROM listings, manuals, and anything else I can find on it.  It was my hope to collect everything, then make a web page to share everything.

Then I stumbled on the http://w140.com/tekwiki/wiki/1240 website.  Not only did they have the service manual, they had a killer collection of ROMs for the 1240/1241 including "Mnemonics ROM Packs" for disassembling executed code. The list of ROMs is impressive, covering many other Tektronix products as well! However, I soon realized that some ROM Packs required additional resources to be able to do that.  It was soon clear that different ROM packs also had to have specific input cards as well  in order to have enough input channels.

From my previous research, I had the answers to some of the missing information, but not all of it.  So now I'm on a quest to collect as much information on the 1240 /1241 as I can, then add it to the tekwiki web page.

I'm asking everyone that has any information, to please either post it below, or contact me.  I'd love to help someone else out in making their 1240 / 1241 useful again!  Thanks.

What I should have done initially: go through the Tek catalogs I have.
The 1240 was introduced in 1984 (1986 for 1241)  and discontinued in 1993.


Tek catalog mentions of the 1240/1241:
  1984: pg 70-74.  1985: pg 116-122.  1988: pg 118-121.  1989: pg 346-350.   1991: Barely.  1993 no mention.

uP support tables that include 1240/1241:
  1984: pg 82, 1985: pg 122 (incl 12RMXX table.) 1988: pg 128. 1989: pg 320-322.
  These list the acquisition boards and probes required for each CPU.

Hmm. Since the online Tek 1989 catalog is 318 MB, here are just the 3 relevant pages scanned:

So, the ones that you've found (that haven't been posted here), where are they?
How's it going with adding them to Tekwiki? They should be linked to from the 1240 page.

I uploaded a file of the character generator EPROM in the 1240, which wasn't already on Tekwiki.
My user name there is Guykd.
But I don't know how to add it to their list of all Tek EPROMS.

Btw, all those PMxxx processor interface modules you mentioned, are for the Tek 1230 model. Not the 1240 or 41.

Edit, to put this online: I am searching for a Tek 12RM63   6502/65C02 Rompack for the 1240. And manual.

Life has gotten in the way the last week or so, but I hope to post them this weekend.

As far as the PMxxx modules, I believe that the PM1xx is for the 1230, and the PM2xx are for the 1240/1241.  I know the 8086/8088 needs a separate module to take care of the memory prefetch and things like that, that the LA can't do on it's own (or at least that is what I have been told).   From your catalog pages, for example,  it says that for a 80186/80188 you need the PM200 Personality Support Module, option 02.  Most other places simply call this the PM202 module.

I scored a PM202 for $5, but sadly it did not come with the manual for it, so I am still looking for that.

The 1241 is one of the rare instruments with an over-penetration color CRT display. That means that instead of a shadow mask or aperture grille to align separate electron beams with phosphor dots, there is only one electron beam, and the screen is coated with complete coverage of phosphor, like a monochrome display. However, there is a dielectric layer beneath the first phosphor, and beneath that a second phosphor of a different color. The color of text on the screen is controlled by varying the accelerating voltage!

The w140 TekWiki mentions that the configuration battery is prone to leakage (after 30 years it would be, wouldn't it) but there is no information on the Internet about that cell type at all. It looks like a NiCad, but the wiki simply calls it "a potassium hydroxide electrolyte cell" and the picture is of a "Catalyst Research Corporation LP3236".

Both examples of the 64K RAM modules (12RS02), also contain the same battery.  Unless someone can offer a reason not to, I am planning on putting a Lithium coin cell and holder in place of the original battery.  I'm thinking something along the lines of a 2032.  I am thinking of doing this on both the LA and both RAM modules I have.

Lithium coin cells are 3 - 3.6V, but NiCd and NiMH are 1.2V per cell. Some memory backup devices used three NiCd cells stacked in a single wrapper.
The issue is that most lithium coin cells are primary non-rechargeable, and would be damaged by the equipment trying to charge them. A diode can be used to block current in the charging (- to + side) direction.

Sorry folks, due to some nasty flooding, and dealing with a basement full of water, I have not yet had the chance to upload any of my info to the TekWiki page.  I know several of you have expressed interest in what I have been collecting. Hopefully I will be able to get my flooded basement issue taken care of, and get that information posted soon.  Probably not this weekend however, as there is more rain predicted over the next few days.

I was actually looking for information on some of the Tektronix ROM packs and I ended up here. I uploaded the instructions on Tekwiki and I attached them to their corresponding page. bsb0011 I hope that you won't hate me too bad for doing it. I just didn't know if you where going to or not. I hope you can type up the information you have sometime soon. There is a lot of information that I haven't uploaded yet.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but had some info to add that maybe a few may find useful.

The original battery from Catalyst Research is a non-rechargeable 3V Lithium Iodide battery.  There were at least two styles of battery installed in 1240/1241 units, one that looks like an oversized coin cell, and another that looks like an oversized crystal can.  Speaking from experience, I can say that the oversized crystal can type battery is of extreme risk of leaking and destroying the A09 board (among other things if left too long - experience talking here).

The battery in the analyzer (and almost certainly the PAK's too) can be replaced with a 3V coin cell without issue, there is no charging circuitry, and the battery is diode blocked to prevent accidental "charging".  To make that more factory-like on the 3 analyzer chassis I recently serviced, I designed a small carrier PCB that matched the battery footprint on the A09 processor PCB, having a SMT CR2032 coin cell holder on it.  I used my board router to produce the three I needed, but I just posted the full artwork and shared it on OSH Park if anyone wants to have some made (or download the artwork to fabricate it elsewhere).  It is shared here - https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/oAsZEWxr and you can simply use a bit of wire or single pin headers to solder it to the processor board.

To correct a bit of information earlier in the thread, the 1241 does not use a special CRT, it is a monochrome CRT with a color LCD shutter assembly (red and green filters) added in front of it, with a different CRT drive board and aluminum mounting panel, along with a different display driver board to support it.  To the best of my knowledge, the rest of the hardware between the 1240 and 1241 is essentially the same, with firmware changes to the EPROMS on the A09 processor board to support monochrome vs. "color".

Finally, a question - has a full manual for the 12RC01 parallel/serial support pack been made available for download somewhere?  I haven't found it yet, but haven't done an exhaustive search yet either.
