My new Video about Charge Pumps and Buck Converters

Hello Guys!

I've just uploaded a new video about DC to DC switching Converters and SMPS. I really put a lot of time and effort in the video. I guess it's worth to take a look at.

Here is the link:



This video concentrates on the general idea of switching converters, motivated by the disadvantages of the linear regulator, which I've been talking about in my last tutorial-video.

It concentrates on two specific topologies:

1.) The Charge Pump   (Switched Capacitor Voltage Converter)
2.) The Buck Converter

So if your'e interested in it, then please take a look at it and let me know what you think about it.

Nice! Recently I made and tested some educational boards with all the topologies of DC-DC converters. I kept as simple as possible. 

An ATtiny13 for PWM (10%-90%), an Inductor, a Capacitor, a Schottky diode, a resistor, a logic level MOSFET and two transistors (tomem pole) to drive the gate.

It worked rally well.

@KedasProbe:Hey thank you. I made an annotation in the video about the typing mistake.

@Firewalker: Yeah it's actually quiet easy to build up buck, boost and inverting converters in the way you described it. You can also use astable multivibrators, or the NE 555 timer to build a square wave oscillator with variable duty cyle.
But micro controllers can of course produce a good PWM too.
But to really build up "all DC to DC converters" You have to consider the following: As I mentioned a couple of times in the video, there are some other Dc to Dc topologies, like the charge pump and the transformer based topologies like flyback, forward and push pull converters. They are more complicated to experiment with, because you need the different kinds of transformers for that. I will deal with those in upcoming video though.

Yes, a 555 could do the job. But it is educational boards. One task for the students (micro-controllers related class) will be to write the code for the controller.

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying your series on SMPS. Explanations are clear and easy to understand and the production value is great. I can't wait to see the rest of the series.

Hey thank You very much. This is the kind of feedback which keeps me running :D.
I really enjoy it, that many people seem to  watch all parts in a row. I'd always fear that nobody would even watch part 2 and 3. It often seems to be  the case that Youtube video series with several episodes  lose viewer numbers with every consecutive part.  It would really be a pity if this would happen to this series because all the really interesting stuff  will come up around part 5, 6,7...

There is one interesting fact, that I'm wondering about though: A large (and growing) percentage of all my viewers come from India. I know that people there are very interested in technology and that repairing electronics is still a well respected and abundant skill in India. (At least more than in the richer western countries)

But can it be that India (like China) is a major production location for Switched Mode Power Supplies ? I'm not sure about it. Any Indians here ?
