MDM (Mobile Device Management)
« on: June 26, 2017, 09:37:15 pm »
I've had my mobile device connected to my work email. I recently get this pop-up message that I need to submit to the new security policy, instead of going to my mail... Here are the details:

Control inactivity time lock
Deny unsigned applications
Deny unsigned installation packages
Disable 3rd party apps
Disable Bluetooth
Disable Browsers and Internet Access
Disable Camera
Disable Consumer EMail
Disable Desktop Sync
Disable External Device Management
Disable HTML Email
Disable Internet Sharing
Disable IrDA
Disable Mobile OTA Update
Disable native apps
Disable non-provisionable devices
Disable Password recovery
Disable POP/IMAP Email
Disable Remote Desktop
Disable simple password
Disable Smartcard
Disable storage card
Disable text/media messaging
Disable WiFi
Enable Device encryption
Enable Device policy refresh interval
Enable IRM
Enable Password
Erase all data - factory restore without warning
Limit calendar age filter
Limit email age filter
Limit email body truncation size
Limit email HTML body truncation size
Manage LDAP accounts
Prevent unknown apps
Require Alphanumeric password
Require device encryption
Require encrypted S/MIME messages
Require encryption S/MIME algorithm
Require manual synchronization while roaming
Require signed S/MIME algorithm
Require signed S/MIME messages
Require storage card encryption
Restrict attachment size
Restrict Attachments
Restrict Password history
Restrict to Approved Application List
S/MIME encryption algorithm negotiation
S/MIME software certificates
Set Min password complex characters
Set Min password length
Set Password expiration
Set password failed attempts
Unapproved InROM application list

I'm not worried, unless this authority falls under unscrupulous control.

It's very common among companies which have a bring your own device (BYOD) policy to implement their own network policies (and if they haven't implemented basic network policies and security, then they are morons).

Just be careful because with BYOD policies, it can easily blur the lines of what is personal and what is company data. You could also find yourself on the wrong side of your companies internet policy if you're using their Wi-Fi network and syncing all your personal applications.

Not saying you'd be posting rubbish on Facebook or syncing dodgy files to your Google Drive, but these are things a lot of people don't think about.

So if that's their mobile policy, when are they gonna hand you a $500 phone that checks email and makes phone calls worse than a 2003 blackberry?

The only thing I wanted to access was the mail, just as I do with my own PC at home using web access. There is no policy to wipe my home PC.

I'd just be using it to casually provide simple answers via email email exchanges, and that is the only access they allow from non-company devices. It was convenient to have an inbox notification.
