USB over WiFi
« on: May 25, 2017, 10:11:45 am »
Hello, I have a high-level technical question.

There is an NI DAQ with USB 2.0 interface, relatively low bandwidth, that I need to talk to over WiFi.

I have read that a USB host server is what is needed to effectively do USB over IP (Ethernet). Then, a wireless bridge can communicate with the data acquisition PC.

What is your view on this? Is there a better way to go about it?

Many thanks,
Alex

WiFi is a means of transport like Ethernet. Google "USB over IP" and you'll find stuff like this (and others).

Thanks Cliff, I am gravitating towards something like this, a USB device server. I could use the ethernet version with an external bridge or the version with the built-in wifi.

Yeah, that project seemed to go off the rails by 2012. On the off chance the original SF project went commercial, I saw results (you follow if req'd) here. One thread seemed to discuss other options here. Good luck!

*Edit the 510 model ($92.00) has some Q&A and some user feedback on Amazon. (shouldn't be that different with devices than the 520 wireless unit).
